    • I should also note that Indie Auto has a magazine rather than a blog format. A variety of features are offered that are designed to appeal to different interests. It’s not supposed to be an either/or game where the magazine publishes X or Y — the idea is to do both and let readers decide their own priorities.

What’s been interesting is when Indie Auto readers tell me that they want to see more of X and less (or none) of Y. Because invariably others have told me the opposite. So what I do?

I suppose that I could prioritize based upon readership data, e.g., if a typical X post gets 100 hits and Y gets 10, then I should do more of X than Y.

Or, since this is a reader-supported website, I could give added weight to the views of those who are donating over those who don’t have any skin in the game.

Or I could take the attitude that I’m effectively doing this website as a volunteer. So why not prioritize the content I most enjoy producing?

Finally, questions about editorial priorities could considered through the lens that Indie Auto promises an “independent” take. If I’m doing my job properly, there is going to be content that individual readers will disagree with — perhaps strongly.

In practice, I take into account all of these factors. Of course, some folks will go away unhappy. I’m sad when that happens, but that’s the nature of the mass media.

  1. Steve – do what keeps YOU goin’. You have made Indie a worthwhile digital mag. You are the captain and the most important energizer/initiator. If you lose interest because of a change of direction, we ALL lose out. Keep doing what you are passionate about – with an eye to keeping most of the rest of us happy – most of the time. lol
