AMC Javelins look better without badly redone stripes

1969 AMC Javelin side

Hemmings’ current “Find of the Day” (2020) is a 1968 AMC Javelin in a lovely metallic blue. Unfortunately, this car — like all too many surviving sporty coupes from the 1960s and 1970s — does not have its original stripes. From afar you may not notice the difference, but it is painfully apparent up close.

The front and back tips of the stripes cut off at fender’s edge rather than tapering downward. Perhaps that’s the best restriping that could be done for a reasonable price. However, I’d rather not have any stripes than a weak imitation of the original. AMC in particular tended to do an artful job with stripes. To mess up their design subtleties is the equivalent of a musician playing a terrific song sloppily.

The car shown above offers an alternative course of action. This 1969 Javelin looks much cleaner — at least from the sides.

As you can see from other photographs of this Javelin, the car’s styling is undercut in front by an added-on black stripe and in the rear by an oversized spoiler that looks like it came from a later-model AMX.
