Jane stopped by to complain about our criticism of the 1959 Cadillac in a recent story (go here). She wrote: “Deride the โ59 Cadillac all you want but itโs considered an iconic American car and one of the few left in the world that are in top condition fetch $200k at auction today.”
This raises a useful point: Indie Auto isn’t a car collector’s website. We leave it to others to discuss how much classic cars are selling for at auctions. Go here to check out our bibliography of links, which includes some leading collector sites.

Much like Paul Niedermeyer (2018) over at Curbside Classic, my thing isn’t fawning over old cars. Our focus is on analyzing automotive history (go here for the method to the madness).
I would also note that Indie Auto’s take on the 1959 Cadillac is hardly extreme. Even General Motors design head William Mitchell was apologetic about how out of hand things got with the 1959 models (Crippen, 1987).
However, that doesn’t mean Jane can’t still enjoy 1959 Cadillacs — and spend $200,000 on one if her heart desires. When it comes to cars, we like what we like.
