LeMay at Marymount hosts 42nd annual show

The LeMay Collections at Marymount are open year-round, but the best time to go is arguably on the day of its annual car show and auction.

This year’s all-day event will be held on Saturday, August 31. As usual it will be held at the historic grounds of the former Marymount Military Academy in Tacoma, Washington. Doors open at 9 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. Admission is $15 general.

What makes the LeMay car show so interesting is that you have access to the nonprofit organization’s entire collection of 1,500 cars, which are spread out over a number of warehouses (go here for details). They have a good mix of vehicles but seem to have a particular fondness for post-war American models. In addition, the lawns around the campus are filled with vintage cars brought by their owners.

LeMay’s Marymount collection should not be confused with another automotive museum in the Tacoma area — the America’s Car Museum. The latter is worth visiting but has a much less relaxed ambiance.

One thing I appreciate about Marymount is that you can bring a camera with a tripod and are not restricted to taking pictures “for personal use only,” which seems to be a trend among more elite museums.
